Dubai has become one of the world's fastest-growing healthcare markets. How has that changed the role of Mediclinic City Hospital?
Mediclinic City Hospital has evolved alongside Dubai's rapidly growing healthcare sector. As patient expectations continue to rise, we have focused on delivering high-quality, patient-centred care supported by digital innovation, clinical excellence and convenient access. Dubai's dynamic environment has challenged us to remain agile while staying true to our commitment to quality and patient safety. Dubai is a fast-paced, consumer-driven economy and healthcare is no different. Patients want information at their fingertips, convenience and immediate access.
That's pushed us to become much more patient-centred. When I first joined, pediatrics closed at 5pm, and nowhere in Dubai closes at 5pm. We need to be accessible on weekends and evenings. We have also adapted our offerings to meet the expectations of a highly international population. We have 80 nationalities working in this hospital alone, and patients arrive with experiences from healthcare systems around the world. Technology such as robotic surgery has grown much faster than we originally anticipated and is now becoming the norm.
As healthcare systems across the Gulf become more sophisticated, what still draws patients to Dubai for treatment?
First and foremost, Dubai is a safe, accessible destination with a strong hospitality offering and a positive global reputation. But the biggest shift I've seen since arriving in 2013 is the growth in trust in the healthcare system itself. Post-COVID, outbound medical tourism has reduced significantly. People who may previously have travelled back to the UK, US or Switzerland for treatment were forced to use the healthcare system here during the pandemic and found that it worked very well.
Today, people come because they trust the healthcare available here. We increasingly see patients seeking treatments that may not be available in their home countries. We have also been able to attract internationally recognised specialists from around the world, bringing global expertise to patients in Dubai. It's no longer just about facilities; Dubai has become a destination for top healthcare professionals as well.
Mediclinic City Hospital sits at the heart of Dubai Healthcare City. How important has that ecosystem been to the hospital's development?
It was very important, particularly in the early years. There was a clear location advantage through Dubai Healthcare City and many of our doctors were self-employed practitioners with clinics already based there. They would see patients in their own clinics and then operate here. That model reduced risk and staffing costs when the hospital opened in 2008 and allowed us to work with established doctors who already had strong practices.
As Dubai has expanded southwards, we have had to evolve. Unlike some of our other hospitals, we don't have a large residential community on our doorstep. As a result, we've reinforced our position as a destination and tertiary-care hospital.
Everyone is talking about AI in healthcare. Where is it making the greatest practical difference?
The biggest impact is reducing the administrative burden on clinicians. With ambient AI, consultations can be recorded and entered into the system in real time, allowing doctors to focus on patients rather than typing notes. Nurses can also use devices that automatically capture and upload information, improving both operational efficiency and governance. We also use automation across a number of administrative and revenue-cycle processes, improving efficiency and allowing our teams to focus on delivering greater value to patients.
On the clinical side, AI is helping in diagnostics. We use Gleamer AI to analyse X-rays and flag potential fractures, RapidAI to accelerate stroke pathways, and digital pathology solutions. That said, Mediclinic is deliberately conservative. Every new solution goes through a detailed review process. Alongside innovation, quality and clinical governance remain our highest priorities. Every technology or new model of care is evaluated against its ability to improve patient outcomes, enhance patient safety and deliver a better patient experience.
Mediclinic has invested heavily in robotics and minimally invasive procedures. Which developments are having the biggest impact on patient care?
The biggest impact has come from using technology to strengthen clinical pathways. Robotic surgery isn't just about having advanced equipment; it's about ensuring the right treatment for the right patient. The evidence now supports robotic surgery for certain procedures, so it's important that we offer it. More importantly, it has allowed us to standardise training, governance and clinical pathways.
Every surgeon must go through our training programme and complete supervised cases before operating independently. That reduces variation. Our aim is to deliver a consistent, high-quality experience for every patient by standardising training, governance and clinical pathways across the program. We're now applying that thinking more broadly through our "powerhouse" strategy, creating standardised pathways across our hospitals so patients receive the same clinical journey regardless of where they enter the system.
What are some of the unique challenges facing healthcare providers in the Middle East?
The demographics are both an opportunity and a challenge. The population is relatively young, which means the disease profile is different from places such as the UK. When the demographics change, the disease profile changes as well, so providers have to adapt quickly.
The other challenge comes at the highest levels of tertiary care. The population is relatively small and highly diverse, which can make it harder to maintain specialist case volumes. A cardiac surgeon recruited from a very busy centre may perform more cases in a month there than in a year here. That's one reason we're focused on creating the right referral pathways and concentrating expertise to ensure specialists maintain their skills and experience.
Mediclinic operates across multiple countries and healthcare markets. What advantages does a large international network provide compared with a standalone hospital?
The governance infrastructure is a major advantage. Whether we're evaluating AI, robotics or new operating models, we can draw on experience from colleagues across Switzerland, South Africa and the wider group. Often another market has already implemented something several years earlier, allowing us to learn from their successes and challenges. Beyond knowledge sharing, being part of the Mediclinic network enables us to provide patients with seamless access to specialist expertise across our hospitals, clinics and virtual care services. That integrated model helps ensure continuity of care, making it easier for patients to navigate their healthcare journey while benefiting from consistent clinical standards across the network.
The network is also invaluable for collaboration and second opinions. Our cancer centre, for example, works closely with Hirslanden in Switzerland. We can seek second or third opinions when needed, and they can do the same with us. Beyond that, there is a constant exchange of operational knowledge, from transplant programmes to laboratory models and reimbursement systems. That international collaboration accelerates innovation, strengthens governance and ultimately benefits the patients we care for every day.
