Coupa is a business spend management platform that helps organizations manage procurement, supplier relationships, contracts, expenses, invoicing, and supply chain operations through a unified, AI-powered platform.
For readers who may be unfamiliar with the company, what does Coupa do for its customers on a day-to-day basis?
At its core, Coupa is a spend management platform. Every organization relies on suppliers, services, and materials to operate, whether they are buying technology, managing facilities, or sourcing components for manufacturing. Coupa helps organizations manage those supplier relationships and the processes that support them.
We facilitate trade between buyers and sellers by connecting organizations with suppliers, managing contractual frameworks, and creating greater visibility across spending. Customers typically come to us looking to stretch their budgets further by consolidating spending, improving supplier terms, and increasing efficiency. At the same time, they want to reduce risk, strengthen supply chain resilience, and ensure they are working with ethical suppliers that meet ESG standards. Ultimately, we help organizations improve efficiency, compliance, and business outcomes.
From your perspective, what is the most common reason AI deployments fail to deliver ROI, and what separates the successful implementations from the unsuccessful ones?
One of Coupa’s greatest advantages is the foundation of rich, trusted data that the company has built over the last two decades. From the beginning, the business was structured around the idea of community, where customers could contribute anonymized transactional data that benefits the broader ecosystem. Today, that represents more than $10 trillion in real transactional history between buyers and suppliers.
The mistake many organizations make is focusing on AI technology itself rather than the quality of the data behind it. If the data is not trusted, permission-based, and rich in domain-specific context, it becomes difficult to generate meaningful insights. Successful AI deployments are those that combine high-quality data with intelligent models that help people make better decisions.
AI should augment human expertise, reduce errors, and automate time-consuming work while allowing people to focus on relationships and strategic decision-making.
Would you describe your agentic AI approach as providing ‘moments of autonomy,’ where humans remain involved at key decision points while AI handles repetitive work?
Yes, absolutely. We see many customers using agentic AI in exactly that way. For example, AI can review thousands of supplier transactions against contractual obligations and surface insights about performance, compliance, or opportunities for negotiation.
The AI provides the analytical foundation, while human experts use those insights to make decisions and manage supplier relationships. The same applies to supply chain risk, where AI can identify potential disruptions based on external events and provide early warnings. The technology handles the heavy analysis while people focus on judgment and action.
You’ve highlighted the importance of data. What role do partners play in helping customers apply that data effectively?
Coupa sees itself as an AI platform for spend management, but we recognize that we operate within a broader technology ecosystem. We are not trying to replace ERP, CRM, or HR systems. Instead, we need strong partners that help us build scalable infrastructure, manage data, and deliver analytics that customers can easily consume.
Our vision is increasingly centered around connected business processes. To make that possible, we rely on strategic partners such as AWS, as well as data and analytics partners. Together, these relationships create the foundation for delivering end-to-end business process automation and exceptional ROI for customers.
How important is your strategic relationship with AWS?
AWS is fundamental to our growth strategy. They provide the infrastructure backbone that hosts Coupa’s solutions and supports our global expansion. We also collaborate closely on developing agentic AI capabilities and helping customers consume those innovations effectively.
The relationship goes beyond infrastructure. AWS is a customer, a marketplace partner, and a co-selling partner. Through our Strategic Collaboration Agreement, both organizations work together to identify opportunities, support customers, and deliver measurable outcomes. We believe that focus on real business value, rather than AI hype, is what differentiates successful partnerships.
As Coupa continues to expand, what is your strategy for growing and managing your partner ecosystem?
Over the last two years, we have built the Coupa Partner Exchange Program, a tiered framework that ranges from global strategic partners such as AWS, Accenture, Deloitte, KPMG, and PwC to regional specialists, resellers, and technology partners. Each tier plays a different role in helping us reach customers and scale globally.
We also work with implementation, advisory, and consulting firms that help customers design future operating models and adopt new technologies successfully. On the technology side, we collaborate with partners that extend our capabilities, and in some cases those relationships evolve into acquisitions. A recent example is Rossum, an AI-focused invoicing company whose capabilities aligned so closely with our vision that we chose to acquire the business rather than build a competing solution ourselves.
What excites you most about the next 12 months for Coupa?
The pace of innovation in AI is extraordinary. We already have a number of AI agents delivering significant value for customers, and we will help our customers accelerate adoption even further.
We are also empowering our partners through Coupa Compose AI, a platform that enables them to build and commercialize their own industry-specific AI solutions using Coupa’s rich data foundation. At our recent developer conference, partners, customers, and Coupa teams created 163 new agents and use cases in a single day. That demonstrates the scale of innovation possible when you combine robust technology, trusted data, and deep industry expertise. We believe this ecosystem-driven approach will continue to expand the value we deliver to customers and drive strong growth for the business.
