Today, about 75% of planted agricultural land is not irrigated at all. Of the 25% that is irrigated, around 75% still relies on older methods like flood irrigation—large fields flooded once a week or every ten days. Much of that water evaporates, crops receive too much at once and not enough afterwards, and the system is highly inefficient. Pivots and sprinklers account for 17–18% of irrigated land, while drip represents just 6–7% of irrigated area—roughly 1.5% of all agriculture.
