There are enough calories produced today to feed the world, but at significant environmental cost.About one-third of land is degraded, water quality is affected by fertilizer runoff and algae blooms, and climate has become a major factor over the past 20 years. Farming has always been risky, but while irrigation, fertilizer, and yield control work in parts of the world, farmers in developing countries lack that support, so shocks are magnified.
