Can you share the origin story of CPL Aromas and its journey so far?

CPL Aromas was founded about 53 years ago by my father and his late brother. My father, an accountant, and my uncle, a renowned perfumer, came together to establish Contemporary Perfumers Limited. This partnership blended unique skills and expertise, laying the foundation for what CPL Aromas has become today. From these roots, we've evolved and grown, maintaining a commitment to innovation and excellence in the fragrance industry.

What is Aromaspace, and why does CPL Aromas focus on innovation and sustainability?

Aromaspace is an innovative concept where we capture and replicate natural scents in a sustainable manner. We began by encapsulating the essence of flowers and plants, and have since expanded to more unique aromas like the smell of dates and oceanic scents.

This process involves capturing a living smell, turning it into a liquid, and then recreating it synthetically. Our work with Prince Charles on the Highgrove Bouquet fragrance exemplifies our approach. Our dedication to sustainability and innovation isn't just a trend; it's a core belief that drives us to stand out in the industry.

How important is the sense of smell in creating emotional and well-being impacts?

The fragrance industry is now recognizing the multifaceted role of scents beyond just smelling pleasant. At CPL Aromas, we've embraced the concept of aroma wellness, exploring how fragrances can enhance happiness, aid in sleep, and even assist in memory-related conditions like dementia. For instance, we've seen how specific scents can evoke powerful memories and emotions, as shown in the case where fragrances helped a coma patient. This underlines the potential of fragrances to impact well-being significantly.

How does being a medium-sized family business influence your approach to innovation?

As a family-owned business, we have the flexibility and drive to constantly innovate, making our approach unique in the industry. We aim to make our clients more successful by providing creative and innovative fragrances. Our focus is not just on creating scents but also on ensuring that these fragrances contribute to the success of our clients' products, whether they are fine fragrances or household items like fabric conditioners and bleach.

How significant is the Middle East market for CPL Aromas, and what other regions are you targeting for growth?

The Middle East has been a crucial market for us for the past 20 years. The region's deep-rooted heritage and love for strong, innovative fragrances have not only been significant for our growth but also influential globally. The Middle East often sets trends in the fragrance world, inspiring brands and scents worldwide. Our presence and success in this region underscore its importance in the global fragrance industry.

What opportunities do you recommend to new founders in the fragrance industry, especially considering the intersection of biotech and smell?

For new entrants in the fragrance industry, AI stands out as a significant opportunity. It's changing how we approach fragrance creation, from market analysis to increasing internal efficiency. The process of developing a fragrance is complex, and AI has the potential to streamline it, making it more efficient. For those looking to innovate, integrating AI into fragrance development could be a transformative step.

How do you balance product efficacy with sustainability and natural ingredients in fragrance creation?

Our approach is multifaceted, focusing on sustainability, well-being, and natural ingredients. We have introduced concepts like EcoBoost, which uses a tenth of the usual fragrance dosage without compromising performance. This not only saves costs but significantly reduces environmental impact. Contrary to popular belief, natural isn't always sustainable. Sometimes synthetic alternatives are more eco-friendly. At CPL Aromas, we assess each case individually, ensuring our products are as sustainable as they are effective.

Can you elaborate on CPL Aromas' approach to sustainability as we move towards 2030?

Sustainability at CPL Aromas goes beyond policies and statements; it's about real, tangible actions. We've heavily invested in reducing our scope one and two emissions, far exceeding our targets. This includes initiatives like using renewable energy, minimizing waste to landfill, and incorporating solar energy in our factories. Our next focus is on scope three emissions, where we are working to influence our suppliers towards sustainable practices. By incorporating sustainability criteria into our purchasing contracts, we are pushing for real change in the industry.

What can we expect from CPL Aromas in terms of key milestones, product launches, or acquisitions in 2024 and 2025?

We are continuously exploring acquisitions to enhance our creative team, aiming to make CPL Aromas a hub for the world's best perfumers. Our goal is to be a company where employees are happy and motivated. The fragrance industry is evolving, and we're adapting to these changes, including responding to external challenges like cartel investigations. Our focus is on creating a positive work environment and navigating industry shifts to stay ahead.
